Jun 23, Javk rated it it was amazing. Chaboute could like, illustrate a textbook about cheesemaking and make it super exciting. He is an artistic gem. This one’s about freezing to death!
It was good, but since it was so simple, too short! Good adaption of London’s short story about a man wandering in the unforgiving cold of the great north.

Though I gotta say It’s colored pretty well, mind you, but it’s an odd contrast to Alone or Park Bench and I feel like this book might have had a better reason to be in black and white than the others. It at least felt a little bit weird to me. Anyway Good adaption of London’s short story about a man wandering in the unforgiving cold of the great north. What I didn’t like was the text.
This book could have worked with direct copies of London’s prose or even without any text at all. Instead he chose to adapt the thoughts of the protagonist or maybe rather the narrator? Which is okay, I guess, but it lost quite a bit of the dreariness London managed to build up.
Maybe it’s just an unfitting translation. Not until I start learning french. When describing why some early Claremont books don’t work for me, I talk about a scene that he writes about Wolverine traveling in the Arctic where he spends several pages narrating how cold the Arctic is, while the character talks about how cold it is, walking amongst a scene ensconsed with snow and ice, that you Can See is cold.

I haven’t read Jack London’s “To Build A Fire”, but I would suggest, having read this adaptation that it should wither have been adapted as a wordless comic or not at all. The text is completely superfluous. I can see it’s fucken cold. You don’t have to spend every page telling me that it’s cold, very cold, freezing. I can see that.
I recommend flipping through the book for its art, but I wouldn’t buy it. Buy Chaboute’s “Alone” or “Park Bench” instead. I honestly love Chaboute. His artwork and being able to use almost just images to tell the story is what made me fall in love with his work. The imagery and the small amount of words just makes this graphic novel just as wonderful. Sobre et tellement efficace. Beautifully illustrated in Chaboute’s black and white signature, London’s haunting tale of man vs.
