Bhagavad-Gita: The Song of God by Prabhavananda

The Song of God is the translation of the Hindu epic from the Mahabharata. Eons ago, two families were poised to clash over the rights to one kingdom. The Pandavas and the Kauravas had equal rights to the Kuru Empire, but the Pandavas had been tricked out of their portion by their greedy cousins. Before the battle, two of the family members, Arjuna of the Pandavas and Duryodhana of the Kauravas rushed to ask the God Krishna for his assistance.

Since Krishna held them both in equal respect, and since both of them came to him at the same time, he offered them a choice. One of them would receive his entire army and military prowess, while the other would only receive him as his charioteer, for Krishna would merely guide him through the battlefield, staying aloof from the violence.

Duryodhana chose the army, his pride blinding him from the truth that Arjuna saw instantly. Arjuna, on the other hand, picked his beloved Krishna, and asked him to be his charioteer. Thus, on the predetermined battlefield of Kurukshetra, where the God Parashurama slew tens of thousands of Kshatriyas, the Pandavas and Kauravas were poised to begin their battle.

Arjuna began to doubt his duty, wondering if killing his family brought him ill-will. He expounded his divine philosophy in the form of this epic verse within the Mahabharata. In gifa, he explained that mankind has one duty alone: In their failure to fulfil their Dharma, mankind falters from the path set by the Gods and at that moment, Krishna will continue to manifest himself time and again.

In these verses, one can find the entirety of Hindu philosophy. They contain sections on family, love, duty and the way of war.

This translation captures the power and intensity of the original Sanskrit, showcasing the true power of Krishna as he unveils his true form, that of the Four Armed Vishnu, the Preserver.
